kept in small indoor aviaries. Both types are equally attractive.
Our birds here at Bird Haven are kept out-of-doors the year round with night temperatures often going below the freezing point and producing ice over the drinking fountains. This will give you an idea of the cold these birds can stand.

Volumes could be written about the keeping of birds in aviaries for pleasure or profit.

Bird Keeping Very Popular

In many European countries, especially Germany, France, and England, beautiful garden aviaries are a common sight. One cannot travel far in these countries without seeing a beautifully arranged garden aviary well stocked with rare colorful birds. In England where the weather is anything but favorable for bird keeping, there are thousands of outdoor and indoor aviaries filled with all kinds of tropical birds. There is hardly a town or hamlet that does not boast a bird club where members get together occasionally and exchange ideas as well as the birds themselves. Some of our most prominent aviculturists and writers on this fascinating subject are English, French and German bird lovers. Some of the more wealthy Europeans possess aviaries and bird sanctuaries that cost many thousands of dollars.

Japan also and China are great bird lovers where even the poor and those in very moderate circumstances possess a few birds, while the wealthier classes have large beautifully constructed garden aviaries containing collections of thousands of dollars worth of lovely exotic birds.

America is at last awakening to the possibilities of the keeping of birds. It makes little difference what your occupation may be, you need nerve relaxation and there is nothing that will aid you in obtaining it so much as the keeping of birds. Start now. Begin building an aviary, either indoors or outdoors, and keep a few birds. We advise starting in a small way at first with only a few birds and as you learn more about the subject, add a few more specimens from time to time.

Try your luck at breeding a few. Nothing will thrill you more than to see your first nest of youngsters, whether they be the commonest type or of the rarest Finches or Parakeets from some far away shore.

Bird Haven is ready to help you get started. If we can assist you in any way, write us and we will be glad to do so.
Many people seem surprised that we guarantee our birds to arrive safely at any destination in the United States. They forget that 90% of the Canaries sold in America are shipped all the way from Germany and on arrival in New York are reshipped to the various bird stores throughout the country. Our birds are much hardier than Canaries and have not previously been handicapped by an ocean voyage.

Out-of-Door Aviaries
There are many and varied ways to build your garden aviary and there is only one main point to consider when making your plans. That is to provide warm, snug sleeping quarters for the birds. If this point is sufficiently taken care of we see no reason why our birds

Indoor Aviary
The framework of this aviary is made entirely of 1 3/4" by 3/4" lumber. This frame is to be covered with 1/2" square mesh wire fabric, painted dark green for better visibility.

First make the base by nailing onto two timbers a square of three-ply veneer board 18" by 24". Next nail the four uprights as shown in the picture. The rest is too plainly illustrated to need explanation except to explain that the narrow piece in front over the pan is 3/4" by 3/4" and is made by ripping one of the 13/4" by 3/4" timbers. This piece is put in so that the wire fabric can be securely nailed to it above the pan.

For a door cut a 3" by 4" opening in the wire fabric in the exact center of the front and then hang a 4" by 5" piece of the wire fabric over it, so as to swing upward to open.

Have pan of galvanized sheeting made to fit cage. This aviary can of course be made any size.
