Homes for the Birds
California Warblers
Haven California Warblers are undoubtedly
the finest of all singing Canaries. They are a
distinct breed of Canary and are bred nowhere else. These birds are not imported but are raised
right here in Southern California. They have
been bred for many years in the famous San Fer
nando Valley, the home of fine singing Canaries.
The Haven California Warbler is unlike any
other Canary in that it is a hardier and longer
lived bird than the imported varieties. These sturdy songsters are mostly raised out-of-doors in the fresh air and sunshine and are kept out-of-doors the year round. Here the night temperature goes as low as twenty-four degrees and quite often the drinking water freezes. They suffer no ill effects from this outdoor life and it insures vigor and health in later years when these lovely songsters are confined to cages and are adopted into the families of our many customers throughout the country.
Song of the California Warblers
Of course the singing quality of the California Warbler is his chief asset for in this beautiful Canary we have the greatest singing bird of all time. There are no singing Canaries that remotely compare with them in song quality. This would not be difficult to understand if you could see how carefully they are selected and bred and how thoroughly they are trained before they are awarded diplomas as finished artists.
In this lovely valley (the San Fernando) the sun shines more than three hundred days in the year. The environment in which the birds are kept, the sunshine, the flowers, and greatest of all, their superb teachers are the things that make these famous warblers the greatest of all singers.
How They Are Taught
The teachers of our young birds are finely trained
singing Canaries used for teaching the young birds
to sing, but they are also taught to warble, whistle and
sing by the California Mocking Bird and the California
Linnet. These two famous songsters are here throughout the year in this valley as they do not migrate to other climes as do the wild birds in other sections of the United States. It is conceded that our Mocking Bird and Linnet are the finest songsters known to the wild bird family and there are literally hundreds of these birds on our farm where they nest and are fed and well treated. They repay us a hundredfold for our kindness to them, by teaching our young Canaries their beautiful songs. The young untrained Canaries take up this song of these master singers promptly and start chirping and warbling at four months of age and after a year of intense training most of them are graduated as finished artists. They are then put into regular individual cages and placed in our bird room where they are kept until they are shipped out to our customers all over the United States and foreign countries, ready to bring joy and entertainment into their homes with their remarkable song and their happy dispositions.
Birds Are Chosen for Song Quality
When choosing a Canary, song is practically everything to be considered. When you buy a song bird you naturally want it to sing, not a few twittering notes that can hardly be heard across the room, but loud, full, free song, beautiful and melodious. Our birds stand up and sing lustily because they are well and happy and sing for the sheer joy of singing. If you have ever owned a Canary or heard one sing you will recognize instantly the superiority of Bird Haven's California Warblers. They sing with their mouths open and have long and varied tours that are most pleasing. They are very tame and gentle and because of their sturdy parent stock and healthy breeding will outlive all other Canaries.
Coloring is Varied
They are also most beautiful in color, ranging from light yellow to orange. Many are beautifully mottled and spotted with dark green. However, all birds are selected for quality of song rather than color. The orange colored birds are very unusual and rare, and much in demand. However, their song is the same as that of birds less brilliantly plumed.
