Breeding Parakeets

<<Previous page Next page>>

The subject of breeding, however, is too lengthy to be explained in detail here where space is limited. Bird Haven has published a booklet on this fascinating subject that treats in detail on our years of experience as successful breeders of Parakeets. It tells the novice in a plain and understandable way how he may begin this lucrative vocation. In this booklet Bird Haven tells for the first time the secrets of their success in breeding Parakeets. It is a very comprehensive work and shows in simple language how you, too, can make money from this interesting hobby. The booklet is entitled "Parakeets For Profit" and is found advertised elsewhere on this page.

Food
Feeding your Parakeets correctly whether you have a single pair for pleasure or a hundred pairs for profit is the most important question of all to be considered. We might say that food is everything, for they can be kept in any kind of a cage or box so long as it is clean but Parakeets must have the proper food if they are to be kept healthy and happy. Stale, musty, unripe seed will starve the bird or make it ill. There are many kinds of packet seeds on the market, none of which is suitable for. Parakeets. They contain many seeds that are harmful to Parakeets and are usually stale and musty.

Parakeets do not thrive on "bird seed"—they must have Parakeet Seed. If your local seed or bird store cannot supply you with the right mixture in bulk, order direct from Bird Haven.
The following seeds comprise the correct diet for Shell Parakeets. Plain Canary (see that it is large and plump), Large Red Millet, Large Yellow Millet, Small Yellow Millet and a small quantity of Hulled Whole Oats. They should also be fed green food three or four times each week, green food such as vegetable tops, clover, grass and so forth but never any lettuce. Feed all the greens they will eat up clean at one feeding and remove all that is left over. Cuttle Bone should be kept before them at all times. When they are rearing young, feed greens daily. Keep plenty of fresh seed, Cuttle Bone and Health Grit before them at all times and also plenty of fresh water to drink. Parakeets seldom, if ever, bathe so require only a small receptacle for water.

Here at Bird Haven we feed "Haven Parakeet Mixture." This is a perfectly balanced ration for Parakeets, containing exactly the right proportions of the finest fresh recleaned seeds. It also contains a sprinkling of rare delicacies that keep the birds in good health and feather. It is always fresh, owing to the large quantities used and sold by Bird Haven. Be sure to furnish your Parakeets with a generous supply of Haven Health Grit.

It will cost you no more to use "Haven Parakeet Mixture" as we prepay all express charges on it and you are always sure of your birds having fresh wholesome seed and exactly the same seed that is fed to our Parakeets here at Bird Haven.

Prices
Prices quoted below are for our choicest matured young stock. If you wish select unrelated stock for special breeding purposes you will find them listed below as "Breeders." These are older birds but not quite old enough to breed. Experience has taught
us that it is better to buy young adult stock for breeding purposes as you are sure to raise fine sturdy youngsters from such parents. If you buy old stock it is apt to be too old and worn out and will produce faulty youngsters. We ship only healthy young adult breeding stock unless requested to do otherwise. The young adult stock will be ready to go to nest for you in about three or four months. The following rites are forMean fig' fehthgreL1141g) birds:
