Lady Gould Finch & Shaft Tail Finch

<<Previous page Next page>>

Lady Gould Finch
Size—about that of Canary.
In the Lady Gould we have the most beautifully colored of all the bird family, barring none. There is no small bird in the writer's opinion that remotely compares with the Lady Gould in color. It has all the colors shown in the spectrum and all are beautifully harmonized. Scarlet,
turquoise, yellow, orchid, purple, orange, black and several shades of green go to make up his dress.

Strange to say that even though the Lady Gould is one of the rarest of the Finches, it is not difficult to breed when it is possible to obtain home raised parent stock. Bird Haven breeds great quantities of them, using the Finch nest box as nesting quarters. They are one of the few Finches that will breed as well in a cage as in an aviary.

The Lady Gould is a native of Australia, where it is becoming extremely rare. They require the usual seeds prescribed previously for Finches but in addition should have White Lettuce seed, Thistle, and Poppy seed. We feed Haven Finch Mixture and Peptone—this combination contains all of the above and also other valuable seeds. Lady Goulds should also be fed Cuttle Bone, Health Grit and green food.

They come in two color combinations. One variety has a scarlet head, the other has a velvet black head, otherwise both varieties are exactly alike and will interbreed freely, producing some of each color in the nest.

Spice Finch
Size—about that of Canary.
This is an Asiatic Finch, a native of India. It is a study in soft browns, a golden brown shading to a chestnut brown on the breast and under parts. They are good singers and make a pleasing contrast when placed with the more brightly plumaged birds and will breed readily in an aviary. Male and female appear alike. Their food is Finch Mixture and Cuttle Bone, green food and Health Grit.

Shaft Tail Finch
Size—about 1 1/2 times that of Canary.
The Shaft Tail is indeed a gorgeous creature. He does not have the colored plumage that some of the other Finches have, but the way in which his modest colors are blended and distributed over the body make him a real beauty. No picture can do the Shaft Tail justice. His soft rose fawn colors, mingled with black velvet, are impossible to reproduce with pallet and brush. Male and female Shaft Tail are practically alike with two long shaft feathers in the tail which extend about three inches farther than the regular tail feathers. These feathers are rather stiff and give the bird an extremely smart appearance. They also have a very sweet and pleasing little song.

The Shaft Tail is a native of Australia where he is by no means common. They are, however, easily bred when domesticated parents are used. Anyone can raise the commoner types but the rarer varieties require a little more thought. That is why they are rare and consequently more expensive.

We have no difficulty in turning them out here at Bird Haven. They require a covered nest box and the same care as the rest of the Finch family. They can be bred in a cage or an aviary and should have the usual Finch food specified for all other Finches, Cuttle Bone and the usual green food. Occasionally they relish a little grated carrot and prepared mocking bird food. All Finches should be supplied with a good mineral grit such as Haven Health Grit as the minerals, bone, charcoal and so forth contained therein are very beneficial.

Shaft Tails will breed any month in the year if allowed to do so. They lay from three to six white eggs per nest.
