Homes for the Birds
Cordon Bleu
Finch
Size—about 2/3 that of
Canary.
This little Wax Bill is a brilliant shade of French Blue, hence the French name "Cordon Bleu." It is, however, a native of Africa.
It is a strikingly beautiful little bird and is very popular with bird lovers owing to the fact that blue is rarely seen among the Finch family, as their colors usually include all but blue. Therefore, the Cordon Bleus greatly contrast when mixed with other Finches. The male and female are alike except for the bright red spot on each side of the head of the male.
The domesticated Cordon Bleus are very hardy and will breed in a roomy cage or aviary. They must not, however, be disturbed when breeding or they are apt to desert the nest and let the eggs chill. They require a covered Finch nest box or will build their own nest in the bushes in an outdoor aviary. They lay from four to six tiny white eggs, which hatch in fourteen days.
Cordon Bleus require the usual Finch Mixture, Cuttle Bone, Mineral Grit and green food. They are also very fond of tiny insects such as Aphids (the little pests that swarm over our best rose bushes) but will, however, live comfortably without the insects for food. We never feed them insects here at Bird Haven. We usually have these birds on hand and can fill orders promptly.

Cardinal Red Bird
Size—a little smaller than a Dove.
The Cardinal or Red Bird is a native of Mexico but is almost exactly like the famous Red Bird of the South. The male is cardinal-red with black cheeks. He has a bright red crest which he can raise at will and is a beautiful singer and whistler. The female is more simply colored, being a reddish brown. They are very hard to breed in captivity. Their food is Finch Mixture, cracked corn and the usual green food.
Cardinals, $17.50 Single Males, each $10.00
per pair.... Single Females, each 8.00
Brazilian Cardinal
Size—same as Red Cardinal above.
A native of South America, the Brazilian Cardinal is in carriage and appearance the same as the Red Cardinal above, except that it is a lovely dove-gray instead of red. The Brazilian Cardinal has a white breast with a vivid scarlet head and crest. It whistles and sings equally as well as the Red Bird. He is, however, snore sprightly and animated and is all around a very desirable bird. Male and female are alike in appearance. Feed and care should be the same as for the red variety.
Brazilian Cardinals, $20.00 Single Males, each $11.00
per pair Single Females, each 11.00
California Red Headed Linnet
Size—about that of the Canary.
This charming bird is a native of our own state, California, and
ranks next to the California Mocking Bird in song. They nest in
the English Walnut trees at Bird Haven and keep the farm alive
with their wild free song. We have raised many of them in our
aviaries where they prove to be gentle and free breeders, using a
Finch nest box. They feed on aviary mixture and are also very
fond of Sunflower seed. Both male and female are mottled, soft
gray, the male having a red head and red breast which turns a
sulphur-yellow after the first year in captivity.
California Red Headed Linnets, $2.50
per pair
